Welcome to the Classroom!

Lateral Thinking Questions:

Bottled Money:

If you put a small coin into an empty wine bottle and replace the cork, how would you get the coin out of the bottle without taking out the cork or breaking the bottle?

Crossing the Bridge:

"U2" has a concert that starts in 17 minutes and they must all cross a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the bridge. You must help them across to the other side. It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown etc.

Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace: Bono:- 1 minute to cross Edge:- 2 minutes to cross Adam:- 5 minutes to cross Larry:- 10 minutes to cross

For example: if Bono and Larry walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed when they get to the other side of the bridge. If Larry then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you have failed the mission.

Note: There is no trick behind this. It is the simple movement of resources in the appropriate order. There are two known answers to this problem. This is based on a question Microsoft gives to all prospective employees.

Note: Microsoft expects you to answer this question in under 5 minutes! There are no tricks to this like meeting halfway or anything. Good luck.

Friday:

A man rode into town on Friday. He stayed for three nights and then left on Friday. How come?

How many stamps:

If it takes twelve 1p stamps to make a dozen, how many 3p stamps are needed?

The cabin:

A cabin, locked from the inside, is perched on the side of a mountain. It is forced open, and thirty people are found dead inside. They had plenty of food and water. Why did they die?

Challenges:

Stepping through paper:

You have a single 8.5x11 sheet of paper, and you can cut it any way you want. The challenge is to have a single continuous unbroken (not glued, taped or stapled) loop of paper big enough to climb through. How do you do this?

Weekly Update: March 4th - 7h

There are minimal updates this week. The grade 8 conservancy course will start on Thursday. We will be gearing up for a pep rally being held next week on Wednesday. Report cards will come out next Thursday.

I will leave the information from last week up here incase anyone missed it.

Responsibility and accountability on the students part has been wavering, so I have taken some steps to help keep them organized and aware of the things they need to get done each week. Every student has been given a timetable for the week, as well as access, to all the documents and papers they will need throughout the week. On Monday morning, we discussed how they can use this to best meet their learning needs, while still attending “lectures or workshops” giving them the instruction they need.

As you can see in the Calendar above, there are a multitude of lessons being given throughout the week on various topics. Blue lessons are mandatory for everyone to attend, while orange lessons are designed to give information and explanations on the topics being covered during the week. The orange ones are not mandatory but are designed for the students who require lesson based structure to learn.

This system is designed to give the rigidity some students require, while allowing enough flexibility for others to manage their own learning. In addition, it allows for lessons and lectures to be delivered which maintains the teacher directed structure some students are more comfortable with.

Each week, students will be required to fill out their timetable first thing on Monday morning, and have it checked over by me or another adult to ensure they have put enough detail in it to keep them on track. They will be handing in their duo-tangs every monday to ensure they are staying on track, and to submit work from the previous week.

If you have questions about this, please contact me asap to help answer them.
